Spiders are Not Cat Toys (Katherine)

The moon was almost full that evening as an older teen was resting in the forested parts of the mansion, he knew getting too close to the area might be dangerous especially if he wasn’t welcomed there. He had never been to this place before, but it looked interesting. A school for gifted beings? He had never heard of such a thing before. He sat up high in one of the sturdy branches of a tree watching the moon as it went by. A lot had happened the last couple of weeks but Scarlet’s thoughts seemed to be at an all time high as he considered what to do with himself. He was a mess, and he’d currently admit it.

As he sat there something furry touched his leg which surprised him as he looked back eyeing it through his mask. It was a…cat?

“Go away.” He said rather bluntly but the black cat wasn’t taking no for an answer as it rubbed up against his leg and purred loudly.

“I said go away. I don’t want you furry things near me.” He said pushing the cat off of him but the feline was persistent. The cat remained at his side despite the protest that came with it. He eyed the cat as it began to wash its face like it had just eaten dinner or something. It seemed innocent enough but he knew cats were solitary and independent hunters. The cat was probably out hunting little things like vermin such as mice, rats and birds.

"I know for one thing, if we met in the wild you'd probably use me as a play toy." Scarlet said with an unamused look in his eyes, well at least behind the mask anyways.

As he ignored the cat, it was hard to mistake the familiar “Meow?” That came from its mouth. But it was clear Kaine wasn’t really a cat person in this situation and he felt uncomfortable. Not even his spidey sense could save him in this situation.

Katherine was lying there on the front lawn looking up at night sky with a smiled on her face. She was just enjoying the crisp cool air and the solitude since mostly the the students are in bed at moment expect a few of cat friends probably out hunting small creatures.The fact was it's not that she didn't like her fellow x-men it's just because her nature of just wanting to be left alone at time and not have to deal with talking because it was hard for. She only been with the team for just a couple of years but in her own way she had grown to love her new family and was willing to protect them with her life if she had too.

She yawned little bit and suddenly sniffed the got a scent of stranger on the property they didn't really smell like a threat but they were an invader.She felt that she needed to investigate following the scent into the forest and jumped on the tree branches to get a better view of her surrounds.She spotted this guy on the tree branch and kind of grinnned towards him as she watch the cat as it rubbed against him she thought it was actually very funny but this wasn't the time to be laughing.The girl's yellow shined in the as she jumps down from her branch and behind him the cat that was pestering him suddenly jumped from the tree and ran.She then speaks in low voice " you better have a good reason to be here sir " the voice seem to almost have a low growl she was ready to fight if she had too. She was actually pretty strong for her size and if she had she would fight him as she waited for his answer with her little arms crossed as her tail swished side to side.

The cat suddenly took off, as if it managed to understand that he didn't want it around, or something else caught its attention. Finally he was alone and that's what he wanted. "Good go bother someone else for a change." He said with a rather unamused voice as he watched the cat leave. However, Scarlet realized he wasn't alone again as someone else entered the area, he felt like he was being watched, and it wasn't those cats that was doing it this time. he turned around as he heard someone climb up the tree, almost as good as he could with wall crawling on trees or on sky scrapers back in the city.

He looked to see someone that he hadn't expected, but it would explain the cats. The woman sort of resembled one with her yellow shining eyes, they shined brightly after the moon light hit them. "I came out here to escape the city life for a bit. I only just realized recently that I was entering a school's ground. I'll pass on if you want...I came out here to think a bit to sort through some tough thoughts." He explained as he narrowed his eyes. If she wanted a fight or didn't believe him he'd probably defend himself in return. "That was your cat wasn't it? He left as soon as you came onto the scene." He observed, but it might as well be a lucky guess at this rate. From the looks of things, the people around here had different powers and different appearances, Scarlet felt as if he wasn't welcomed in most areas, and it'd likely be the same here.

Katherine looked at him interested tints her head at him trying to figure out if he was lying or not.The guy didn't seem like he was lying her ears told her that by the tone of his voice her hearing was very good.She continued to stare at him with few more moment and shook her head towards him " no you don't have to, I'm Werecat by the way and you are ? " She crouched and smiled little bit toward as her tail curled around her.She was being friendly to him since the people at the mansion was just as nice to her when she first moved here and wanted him to feel welcome.

She was interested in him she was actually hoping that she won't get in trouble with any of professors since she is talking to the stranger that was trespassing on their property for all she know he could be some kind of bad guy that might attack them at any moment.She was just glad he wasn't afraid of her like the people of the city they mostly see her as monster because of her appearance which she never understood why that.She usually a very shy person and she hardly speaks to anyone but right now she needed to be brave just in case she needed to do so.

Kaine was about ready to leap onto the next branches with his own reflexes. They were pretty strong and accurate for the most part. So these trees were almost like a haven for him. You usually don't have a whole lot of trees in places like Las Vegas but if you looked hard enough you might be surprised yourself. "So you're Werecat? My name's Scarlet Spider." He said knowing that was his code name but others liked to call him monster or freak but he preferred Scarlet Spider more than anything. Kaine didn't exactly have heightened senses or anything like Katherine's ability's but he did have his Spidey sense that would've gone off if there was trouble or danger.

"I'd know if there was danger in the area thanks to my spidey sense, and oddly it didn't go off by you. So I guess I can trust you." Scarlet explained as he crouched down a bit to get to Katherine's height. He may have been a little taller but he knew that the difference might scare her away. "I think I was curious coming to this area. I heard this is a school for 'gifted beings'. Unfortunately I'm not one of those. I'm more of a freak or a monster if you want to call it that." Scarlet said knowing his whole life he had been put down like that by the ones who had experimented on him. Nine years was after all a long time.

Katherine smiled towards him and just listened to what he had to say but her smiled dropped to frown and her ears went back.The guy was really down on himself and seem to be going though.She knew for the fact that the school usually accepted all kind of people and probably would accept someone like him. When he went to her height which wouldn't have matter since she knew that a lot of people are bigger then because of her condition.She was really sensitive about her size if anything what he was doing was what she considered very insulting but she was being nice about and not telling because she didn't want to be rude

She then replied to his about calling himself a freak and a monster which was not a words she like at all " Scarlet spider We don't use those words here ...I am pretty sure you would be welcome here" She tilts her head towards him trying to get him to feel then says " look at me..I am humanoid Cat person people in this ..city...call me a monster and a freak as well ......"She looked towards the gates and back and him and sighed as she went silent.The fact was this was the longest as she ever has spoken to anyone at moment and she doesn't know the protocol to get new students in the school as her she was rescued by the team and has been thankful for every moment of her time here and she hope that she can get Kaine to see that.

So their first introduction didn't go very wel at first, the two could've ripped eac hother to shreds but he stopped it before it got worse. "Unfortunately ma'am I don't think I'd do very well here. I'm a loner most of the time...but I like you, I can stop by often if you want or you can just call me." He said. He was glad that there were places like that, though Kaine wasn't exactly a mutant himself, he was glad to see that there were places, almost a refuge for other super powered beings to be in. He didn't want to tell Katherine about his past with the Dark Syndicate. She might think of him as truly being bad, but really he couldn't figure out what he wanted to do with himself now. He could at least give her his phone number he always had that on him all the time no matter where he went. And it's' true, between the two of them they were different and that was something they had in common.

"I like it that there's a place for others for refuge we need more of these in the future. At least that's what I think." he said with a bit of an approving tone. "But as you guessed from my name I gained spider powers, some of which I wish I didn't have. We both got some form of animal powers from the sounds of it." He said as he thought about his stingers and the Mark of Kaine, something that he had been named for from his powers. Without thinking it, he felt the stingers starting to come out and he winced, great, that was just a great slip up on his part. Many had fallen with these stingers, and he had also defended himself as well. "I hate these stingers," He said trying to put them behind his back before she saw them and things might turn bad once again.

Katherine just looked towards him and then nodded bit towards him then smiled softly towards him. She thought it would be great for her to able to see what he looked like but at moment knew better then to ask him. The guy needed someone that cared about him and maybe she will be the one to get through his shell. She really felt like she could really trust him he was being really kind to her and hasn't even comment if she acted like a real cat or something like that.

She then listened to what he was saying and just nodded and then speaks in soft tone " Yes it's a great place although I find it hard sometimes to talk to people as for it seems easier right now you know." She was telling him the truth right now and she decided she wanted to give him something else to call her " you know Scarlet Spider....how about you call me Katherine it's my real name ..Werecat is what the papers ... called me " She wanted to trust even if he did tell her past she wouldn't know what he was speaking of as she didn't know many villain teams since she is still sort of new to her own team herself.

Messy brown hair and brown eyes, kind of normal to look at...well if you minus out the spider powers he sheathed his stingers back in noticing that Katherine didn't seem to mind them. "Katherine, that's a good name...I can give you my first name if you want..." Scarlet seemed really hesitant on that part since only one other person knew at least of his real name but he trusted Sue Storm with it. She had the technology to try and find his past...in fact he wondered if he should go back there any time soon since she knew how to help him. He wanted to know. What happened to him before he was in OSCORP? He had a family, he had a life, maybe even went to school, but half those things were just guesses or assumptions.

"My first name is Kaine." He admitted as he looked shyfully, away wondering if she wanted to see what was underneath his mask. A part of him had a feeling that she might.

"Ok maybe I can show you a little more than that...I trust you Katherine...just promise me you won't tell anyone else. Not even your friends. Some identities are left to be a secret for a reason." He said with a sigh as he took a deep breath like he had gone under water. He slowly lifted his face mask up and removed it as skin started to appear. his dark brown messy hair came into view and his brown eyes. But on the right eye was a horrible scar that damaged the eye a bit, but he could still see. His face was a bit on the pale skin side. "Well, what do you think? Am I still a freak?" He asked. Sometimes he had wished everyone was like this...but no they still believed he was a bad guy.

Katherine looked towards his face as he removed his mask he looked really handsome to her as she smiled and the most sexy feature at least in her opinion is his scar. When he asked if though he was freak she shook her head towards him " No, I don't I actually think you're very handsome ,but do you think I am freak " She sighed little bit toward she wanted to know this she was pretty concerned about this since not many people liked her outward appearance.

She said as she reached out to touch his face with sad expression on her face not knowing he didn't like being really touched. She knew he was being nice to her but she wanted to know. She didn't even had to think about her answer to the next question " I promise not to tell anything Kaine you have my word" she had serious look in her eyes.She didn't think she had friends to speak of since she was very shy towards the other students although she did only had a few that she truly trusted.

It was true that he didn't like to be hugged or even touched by that closely by others. He blamed his time in Oscorp for a lot of things, and it changed him from being probably a free and rebellious kid to a tough guy who pretty much hated everything. But Katherine...she changed him once again to see that the world wasn't all that bad. In fact he closed his one eye as he felt her fingers touch his scar. It felt funny feeling it but it also felt good at the same time. "No you're not a freak, Katherine. You are unique in your own way." Kaine said. "You should remember that." He added hoping if she remembered anything from their meeting, they should at least remember those few words that he gave her.

"Thank you, Katherine. I'm glad I was able to meet you and I trust you too." He added giving her a soft smile. It was something he hadn't done in awhile and it surprised him. But between Sue and Katherine, he really wondered if he'd be able to be on the right track again. Sue was just a friend, but she also opened up his eyes to see that not everyone was bad. And Katherine did the same. "I got the scar for disobeying orders, that was when I figured out that I was being used." Kaine said with a frown as his emotions changed once more as he felt that frustration come back from when he hated Oscorp. "they gave it to me so I wouldn't forget."
